You are invited to an open evening to find out more about becoming a Friend of Boston Cemetery
Wednesday, November 25
Boston Crematorium, 6pm to 7.30pm
Boston’s Victorian Cemetery is a haven away from the bustling street life of the town centre. It is rich in wildlife and nature, whilst also being home to an abundance of social history.
The Victorian cemetery is listed as an historic park and garden. Within the cemetery area is a grade 2 listed chapel which is currently not accessible to the public. The chapel is boarded up and whilst structurally intact it requires significant works to restore with dry rot identified. Sadly a symmetrical chapel which once stood opposite it was demolished in the 1960s. Boston Borough Council is keen to establish a Friends group to explore the possibilities of breathing new life into the remaining chapel, before it is too late.
In these difficult financial times the best option to rejuvenate the chapel and its surroundings is to establish a Friends group to work in partnership with Boston Borough Council to apply for funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund. A successful grant application could see the chapel saved as well as a programme of events and activities to celebrate the fascinating wildlife and heritage within the Victorian cemetery.
We are looking for people from all backgrounds and abilities to come along to the open evening to hear about the importance of the area, what funding is available and what possibilities grant money could bring to the site.
