“Katherine, (sister to Geoffrey Chaucer author of Canterbury Tales), was sent to Lincolnshire to marry the elderly ‘De Swynford’ (lands @ Kettlethorpe/Coleby).

She was to become 1st the mistress, later marrying John of Gaunt (Duke of Lancaster).

John of Gaunt was considered one of most powerful Princes of 14c while Katherine renowned for her beauty, was regarded by her contemporaries as intriguing and even dangerous!

Katherine lived in ‘The Deanery’ (opposte Lincoln Cathedral) while John/Katherine’s son, Bishop Henry Beaufort resided at Medieval Bishops Palace, once amongst the most important buildings in the Country!

Katherine’s shrine is in Lincoln Cathedral”

Anya Seton published ‘Katherine’ , bringing her to Lincolnshire’s attention some 30 years ago! Every May, Katherine is celebrated with her own Study Day in Lincoln!
