A Victorian Miscellany
On Thursday 14th May, you are invited to explore the Cottage Museum in Woodhall Spa, atmospherically lit for a rare evening opening. Discover a miscellany of activities and pastimes from the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods.
Meet costumed characters with demonstrations and displays of domestic activities and leisure pursuits from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries including lacework and music. You will have the chance to view a selection of images from glass slides which would have been used for a ‘Magic Lantern Show’ and there will be a display of kitchen implements.
Visitors will be treated to a glass of lemonade or a cup of tea and a fondant fancy or macaroon, all included in the admission price!!
The Museum is housed in a late nineteenth century ‘pre-fab’ which was home to the Wield family for many years. It is a joy to explore and packed with interesting information about the family, the locality and the wonderful and extensive collection of photographs, many of which were taken by John Wield.
2015 is the first time that the Cottage Museum has participated in ‘Museums at Night’ which is an annual UK wide festival which seeks to encourage visitors to museums and galleries by throwing their doors open after hours and organising special evening events. It ties in with the European ‘La Nuit Des Musees’ and takes place on the nearest weekend to the 18th May. It is co-ordinated in the UK by the non-profit making digital cultural organisation Culture24.
The event will run between 7.30pm and 10.00pm, at the Cottage Museum, Iddesleigh Road, Woodhall Spa LN10 6SH. Admission is only £5.00 including refreshments – please book in advance. To book, please call into the Museum, ring 01526 352456 or 01526 353775 or email
We look forward to welcoming you to the Cottage Museum.
