The Cottage Museum in Woodhall Spa is usually closed to visitors in the winter months but this year is opening specially on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of December for a very special Victorian Christmas event. The Museum will be magically decorated for a traditional Christmas. Visitors will be able to meet museum volunteers and discover intriguing facts about the traditional festivities and customs associated with mid-winter celebrations, especially those associated with Victorian times. Discover the story behind the Christmas cracker, find out about the very ancient tradition of bringing greenery into the home in mid-winter, view the seasonal ‘Magic Lantern’ show of a wintry Woodhall Spa in times gone by, and explore the decorated home of the Wield family which was constructed in Victorian times. Simple seasonal crafts will be available over the three days and intermittent traditional storytelling and seasonal music will take place by the Christmas tree.

The Cottage Museum is a joy to explore and packed with intriguing stories and displays about Woodhall Spa, the local area and the Wield family, who lived in the building from 1887 until the 1960’s. The Museum building itself is an important exhibit. It is a rare surviving example of a bungalow constructed of corrugated iron on a wooden frame that was erected in the late nineteenth century.

John Wield (1877-1964) was a keen photographer and his photographic collection is the basis of the Museum. This collection of images is a unique and valuable record of life in Woodhall Spa and includes images of both people and the local area.

The Museum recently underwent a substantial redevelopment opening in 2013 with new displays and interpretation, funded primarily by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Visitors are very appreciative of the new displays;

‘What a magical place to look back in history and see how people lived’

‘Amazing to find such a jewel, it really is wonderful, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit’

The Cottage Museum, Iddesleigh Road, Woodhall Spa LN10 6SH will be open on the 5th, 6th and 7th December 10.00am-4.00pm with normal admission charge of £2.00 with concessions
